After Alaska, Washington is the second best state to be for the American mountaineer! The great volcanoes of the Cascade range with their proximity to the ocean lead to several heavily glaciated peaks. The tallest of which is Mt Rainier, an awe-inspiring mountain with 25 glaciers and a combined area of 35 square miles (90 square kilometers). American mountaineers such as Ed Viesturs, Tom Hornbein, Jim Whittaker and Willi Unsoeld trained on Mt Rainier before going off to climb the greater ranges of the world. The state has several alpine and mountaineering projects available for climbers of all technical skills.
